Hickory Basement Bathroom Renovation
A basement bathroom renovation in Centerville, Ohio.
The clients had a basement bathroom that barely functioned — the original space was little wider than its own doorway, with a shower, vanity, and toilet crammed into a single tight room. The goal was to make it genuinely usable for the family, and we found the space to roughly double its size in the process.
I designed and managed the full renovation from concept to final reveal. The smartest move was structural: we walled off the original cramped layout, relocated the entry to open toward the basement living room, and split the bathroom into two zones — a vanity area where one person can get ready while another showers behind a separate, lockable door. It functions almost like two bathrooms in one. The redesigned shower room was built as large as the space would allow while keeping a tub, finished with a custom shampoo niche, a towel warmer, and built-in storage shelving for everyday function. Warm gold accents, an evergreen fog palette, custom tile, lighting, and coordinated paint tie the entire space together, right down to the rug.
What was once a cramped, frustrating bathroom is now beautiful, spacious, and far more functional for the whole family. Knowing how to rethink a layout — not just refinish it — is exactly what turns an awkward space into one that truly works.
